What do I feed catfish fingerlings within four to five months until harvest-able sized fish is attained is a question I get asked frequently.
I would say feeding catfish fingerlings to harvest-able sized fish within a reasonable length of time depends on the nutritional quality requirement of the fish and you’re stocking rate.
Where you run high density recirculation system, your fish must be fed with high quality feed. However, in the case of low stocking rates in ponds you can use naturally occurring feeds in addition to supplementary feeds.
In general, floating feed with a 32% protein should be fed to catfish fingerlings in high density stocking situations. Management of sinking feeds are more difficult when used, but never the less it can be used. It is to be noted that generally, catfish producers prefer floating feed.
In the morning, it is better to feed the fish after dissolved oxygen levels in your pond water have started to rise and not later than mid-afternoon. This is to enable proper digestion to take place during periods of relatively high dissolved oxygen. When oxygen levels in pond water are low your fish will not eat and digest feed efficiently.
