WHAT TYPE OF SPACE DO I NEED TO GROW MY FISH

WHAT TYPE OF SPACE

DO I NEED TO GROW MY FISH?

This is a continuation of my previous post last week on the question, what type of space do I need to grow my catfish?

RACE WAYS:

Raceways are increasingly becoming the most popular water facilities in Nigeria for raising fish. A good number of the most productive farms most especially in the urban areas use this type of facilities.

Raceways make use of flowing water. It may well be a long narrow construction or a series of constructions, through which water flows. The water may flow through naturally, or forced to flow by the use of pump.

The semi-raceway is the most popular one here in Nigeria. The water is made to flow through slowly. The foremost advantage of raceways is that catfish can be stocked in them in high population per area of land than in ponds.

‘Open’ or ‘flow’ through raceway are raceways in which the water enters at one end and is disposed of at the other end. The water is not reused. Flow through raceways can accommodate up to 50 – 70 fishes per square meter.

‘Closed’ raceways are raceways in which the water enters at one end and is removed at the other end and filtered, aerated and reused again and again. Usually most closed raceway are not completely closed but are ‘modified closed’.

In closed raceways pumps are used to circulate the water hence, more energy is required in raceway culture than pond culture. This type of fish farming can be very profitable under close and thorough supervision.

TANKS

Also popular in Nigeria is the use of tank especially the plastics type. Their shapes may be rectangular or circular and could be closed or open like in raceways. Therefore they are also useful for very intensive culture.

Remember, that proper identification of the type of space you want to use to grow your fish is very important.

WHICH SPACE DO I USE TO GROW MY FISH

WHICH SPACE DO I USE TO GROW MY FISH?

All prospective fish farmers must learn to ask get the right answers

to the question which space do I use to grow my fish.

Usually farmers select the facilities to match the type crop to be produced.

The same is true for catfish; the type of water facilities determines how fish

are to be raised. Similarly the technique of raising fish has considerable

influence on the planning and construction of your facilities.

Once you have constructed your facility, it is usually less practicable

to change to another facility.

Your catfish farm will usually have a combination of facilities unique

to your farm. Therefore it is very important for you to have a complete

picture of the type of facilities you will need before construction is started.

It is always better to seek professional advice before investing your money.

You can consider about five (5) types of facilities:

  • Ponds
  • Tanks
  • Raceways
  • Vats
  • Aquariums

The nature of the production system that you want deploy is the major factor you need to consider when selecting your water facility.

If your farm is to produce both fingerlings and food fish, you will need different facilities from those which will only produce food fish.

You will need to take a closer look at some of the different KINDS OF WATER FACILITIES. For example;

  1. 1.     PONDS: There are quite a few types depending on your kind of catfish farming operation.

Grow-out Ponds: these are ponds in which catfish are grown to table size. The size and arrangement are usually determined by:

a)    The topography of your land

b)    The size of your farm

c)     The economics of production in relation to your pond design.

Usually large ponds are more economical in construction, however, when it is time to harvest the cost can more than upset your savings in construction cost.

  1. 2.     HOLDING POND: This is a small pond in which parent fish stock are kept between spawning season. These types of ponds are only needed on farms that produces fingerlings and are frequently built in conjunct with spawning and rearing ponds. Holding ponds may be about 1 acre or less in size. Quite a few small ponds of about ¼ acre each are preferable so as to make the management disease outbreak easy.
  1. 3.     SPAWNING POND: This is usually a small pond of about 1 to 5 acres where parent fish stocks are placed for spawning. More than often, hapas or pens are built in the ponds to place the fishes.
  1. 4.     REARING POND: This is a small pond in which the fish fry are placed for raising into fish fingerlings. The size of your rearing pond will depend upon the number and size of fingerlings to be produced.

This post will be continued next week so look out same time same day.

It’s important that you identify the type of space you want to use to grow your fish.
