HOW DO I IDENTIFY CATFISH
How do I identify catfish is a question I have been asked on several occasions. To answer this question you will need an insight into the definition of catfish.
I’ll like us to look at the variety of fish bearing the name catfish:
- African mud or (sharp tooth) catfish – Clarias gariepinus is the main specie of culture especially in Nigeria and Africa. It is also commercially grown in countries such as Holland. Some other related species like the Aluminum catfish, Chriscthys nigrodigitatus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis are also grown in Nigeria but have enjoyed less popularity.
- The channel catfish - Ictalurus punctatus is the champion of farmed fish in America and is progressively more favoured in sport.
- The European variety or “wels” - Silurus glanis is popular in central Europe as food fish and sports.
- Ornamental Fishes - Such as fresh water, Glass, Network Upside down and Ocellifer catfish are also regarded as catfish.
It is important that you identify the type of catfish you want to grow.
