WHERE I CAN BUY MY FISH FINGERLINGS?

WHERE I CAN BUY MY FISH FINGERLINGS?

If you are just starting fish farming, where you can buy fish fingerlings is a question you would have asked one time or the other. Therefore, the question where do I buy my fish fingerlings from is very pertinent.

Without any self servicing or undue discrimination and based on my ‘unforgettable experience’ and that of farmers who have approached me in the past, I will advice you to buy only from highly recommended fingerlings production setups. It is important that you source for and get the most proper size and age; failing which you might be laying the foundation for huge loss at the end of your production cycle.

I would like to advice that you study the following information concerning your choice of fish fingerlings producer; age and size of fingerlings. It will be of great help to you in answering the question, where can I buy my fish fingerlings from?

1       NEVER BUY FROM THE WILD

Catfish Fingerlings Caught In The Wild River

Catching Fish Fingerlings in Wild River

Where you choose to buy your fingerlings from those who catch them from the wild river, the likelihood of you buying the right type of fish is remote. You will most likely end up buying other sub species of Clarias species; the most common being Clarias Submaginatus that might never grow past 186mm size. If by any act of omission or commission you end up with this species, you will forever regret the day you went into fish farming.

2      TAKE FROM YOUR OWN STOCK

Where you are into fish fingerling production and hatchery management and want to go into table size fish production your best option is to take from your stock whenever you want to stock you growout ponds.

3     WHAT YOU NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR:

These are some of salient points you should watch out for when sourcing for your fish fingerlings.

a.    Specie Identification: It is important to note that Clarias lazera species have a close cousin called Heterobranchus. A cross of these two species called Heteroclarias are also be available in the market. However, when you are stocking any particular pond, it’s important to ensure that your fingerlings are from the same set of parent or particular sub-specie.

b.    Age of the Fingerlings: It is important to subtly confirm the age of the fingerlings you are buying from the producer or supplier. A six weeks old fish should be about 2inches long while four weeks fish should be about 1½ inches. However, where you are a newbe it is advisable to stock your pond with 3-5 inches length JUVENILE fish.

c.    Size of your fish at purchase: Low prices of your fingerlings should not be the determining factor. Where you make low price your principal consideration, on the day of delivery you will be stunned by the small size of the fish baby. The truth is that you might have been supplied fish with staunted growth.

d.   Transportation: Where your fish farm location is very far from your source of supply ensure that the packaging for your fish is in oxygen bags placed inside double corrugated cartons.

From the above, I hope you will be able to find an answer to the question, where can I buy my fish fingerlings.

Remember, that buying the right type of fingerlings/juvenile is very important. It is even better when the fingerlings/juvenile is energized.

HOW DO I PREPARE MY POND FOR FISH

HOW DO I PREPARE MY POND FOR FISH

How do I prepare my pond for fish is a question I have been asked repeatedly? In this discuss I’m going to assume that you have finished building your pond. Once that is done with the next step is to make it favorable for stocking your fish.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

While you are waiting for the supply of fingerlings the following points should be noted in order to boost the health and comfort of your fish.

 1.     MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT DARK

It has been observed that Catfishes feed better and are more comfortable in dark environment. It is therefore in your overall interest if you create a good and tight shade for your pond.

In order to achieve this, you can use aluminum spans roofing sheets, tarpaulin (nylon type preferable), raffia thatched roof etc.

 2.     IN RACEWAYS CEMENT  MUST BE WASHED OFF

Where your facility is a raceway built with concrete or block, you must wash off the cement. Where you don’t, you will more than likely loose your fingerlings as a result of the alkalinity caused by the cement dust. I lost 2,000 heterobranchus fingerlings because of this costly mistake so be warned.

 3.     WATER QUALITY TESTS

Before you embark on a major commercial catfish farming operation it is in your own interest to carry out your water quality test. It is very important that you confirm from the result of your water quality test to see how well it tallies with the exact requirement table as shown below.

Oxygen Greater than 3 parts per million
To C 20-30o C, 27oC - Optimum
PH 6.5 - 8
Nitrogen <120% saturation
CO2 <15ppm
NH3 <0.05ppm
NH4 <8.80ppm
NO2 <0.25ppm
NO3 <250ppm
Cu <0.03ppm
Zn 0.1ppm
Cd 0.0006ppm
Salinity <15.000ppm

 4.     USE GOOD QUALITY WATER

 i.   Tap Water: When using tap water, make sure you leave the water in the pond for at least two days before introducing the fish. This is to let the chlorine or chloramines added from the water works as disinfectant to evaporate, if not it could harm fish.

ii.   Borehole  or Well Water Source: In the case of borehole or well water, allow your water to run through a shower rose sprinkle to remove the carbon dioxide in the water and leave it for 2 days before stocking your fish.

iii. Stream / River or Tidal Movement Water: In order to prevent dangerous predators from entering your pond via the inlet you must ensure those appropriate mesh screens are put in place.

 5.     USE OF MOSQUITO MESH NET

The use of mosquito mesh net have been found very useful if your fingerlings are less than 2inches to prevent cannibalism by frogs and messy spawning in your ponds by toads. However, it will not necessary if you buy juveniles about 3 – 4inches and above. For profitable results and as your starting stock I’ll recommend you start with juveniles.

With what has so far been discussed, I hope you would have found answer to the question, how do I prepare my pond for fish.

Remember, that proper preparation of your pond for fish is very important.

PRINCIPLES OF CONCRETE POND/ RACEWAY CONSTRUCTION

THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF CONCRETE POND/

RACEWAY  CONSTRUCTION

The ten most important principles of concrete pond/raceway construction are as listed below.

Fish Farming From Fingerlings To Table Size Invitation To Ten Days Video Boot Camp

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

 1.  Clear your selected site (where necessary)

 2.  Peg out the desired size (say 5m x 2m x 1.5m medium sized pool) or according to designed size and buy nylon    twine or rope to demarcate the pegged area.

3.  Excavate your pond soil into the ground by two coaches of block deep and remove the excavated soil into the center of the pool.

4Blind the floor with cement / sand mix at ½ inch thick.

5.  Floor your pond bed with a good “German floor” mixture of cement, sand gravel and in the ratio 1:2:4 to produce an impervious bed with a thickness 1.5cm (3inch) to 10cm (4 inches).

6.  SLOPE the floor of your pond by two percent towards the lower side for easy drainage

7.  PLUMBING: You should lay 1¼ to 2 inch diameter draining pipe closed with a gate valve and erect a 4 inch diameter perforated pressure plastics pipe which will prevent fish from escaping and at the same time will not get clogged.

8.  Wall: Erect your block walls along the four sides of the pond using 9-inch blocks. Don’t forget to fill the hollow part with concrete as each layer of block is layed. Your pond walls should extend about 60cm (3ft) above the ground level a total pond depth of 120cm (4ft).

9.  Overflow: Additional one coach of blocks should be built round the perimeter and a 2 inches overflow pipe should be install and screened.

10. Plaster: The inner walls of the pond as well as the outer 2ft above the ground level should be plastered with a good thick layer of cement and sand mix in the ratio of 1 bag of cement to 6 head pans of sand or use waterproof cement and mix in the ratio: 2 head pans of sand, plus one bag of cement. 2kg waterproof and allow the mixture to dry slowly by using raffia or jute bags to cover it while also wetting twice daily for 7 days under a shade or cool atmosphere.

Remember, that proper construction of your concrete pond/raceway is very important. Hence you must observe the ten principles of concrete pond/raceway construction.

FISH POND DESIGN

FISH POND DESIGN

Your fish pond design should be such that when built you can easily fill it with water and totally drained the water. Usually rectangular ponds are much easier to build and harvest when compared with square or round ponds. The building of smaller pond that is about 15m x 10m (150 square meters) should be preferable, but ponds can be larger.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

1.     PREPARE THE SITE

If your choice of site is a virgin land, you will need to carry out site preparation works such as clearing the vegetation, cutting and removing of trees.

2.     BUILDING A CLAY CORE

A clay core is your foundation for the pond bank as it makes it strong and prevents leaks. You should dig a trench about 50cm wide and 30-60cm deep, it should be just outside the lower side of the pond and halfway up on the side of the pond. The trench should be filled with good clay soil and properly compacted. Haven done this, it should provide you with a strong foundation for your pond walls.

 3.     DIGGING YOUR POND AND BUILDING THE WALLS

The next step is to dig the pond and use the soil to build up the walls of your pond. If you have more of sandy soil, don’t use it. Your pond walls should be about 30cm above the water level that is inside pond. It should have a gentle slope, rising 1m in height for every 2m in length.

4.     BUILDING AN INLET AND OUTLET

Your inlet pipe carries water for filling the pond. As this often contains a lot of soil which can make the pond very muddy dig a hole beneath the inlet pipe. It will allow the soil to settle and prevent your pond from filling up with dirt.

The inlet pipe should be screened to prevent wild fish from entering. It should be about 15cm above water level to prevent fish from escaping through it and at the same time mixes air into the water as its splashes into the pond.

It’s preferable that the water should be about 30cm deep at one end and 1m deep at the other.

5.     PROTECTING THE POND BANKS

Once you have completed the pond, to prevent erosion cover it with the soil you saved when the pond was being dug.

In other to prevent damage to the walls dig a run off ditch along the upper side of the pond to carry water away from it. The outlet is a runoff pipe through the pond wall which is only used in emergencies. You should screen the outlet to prevent fish from leaving the pond.

6.     FILLING YOUR POND

Rocks should be positioned at the bottom where the water will fall in from the inlet pipe. This is to prevent the water from digging a hole and eroding the pond bottom.

The pond should be filled at least two weeks before you stock your fish. This will allow your pond to become warm and fertile before stocking fish. Your pond may seep water initially, but should seal eventually.

Please remember, that proper selection of pond site is very important and you are now more informed on the choice of fish pond design.

HOW TO SELECT FISH POND SITES

HOW TO SELECT FISH POND SITES

What are the important considerations in selecting pond sites?

How to select fish pond site

Selecting Fish Pond Site

There is every need to take great care in selecting your pond site. The advantages of a good location consist of cost saving during construction, simplicity of operation and production efficiency.

While no two farms are precisely the same however, you will need to take the following factors into consideration in your choice of sites

 a.  Simplicity of Drainage: Preferably by gravity and in the alternative by use of low cost water pumps

b.  No flooding history: Most especially as a result of periodic release of water from nearby water dam causing rivers   to overflow or prolong rainfall.

c.   Land use history: Previous agricultural land where the use of serious pesticides has been deployed should be avoided.

d.  Nearness to an ongoing intensive agricultural farm: It is better to avoid siting your fish farm on the downwards side of an ongoing agricultural farm where chemicals are likely to be used.

e.  Ability of the soil to retain water: In other to reduce the cost of your site development you need to determine the water retention capability of the soil and amount of ground water on your intended site.

Choosing the ideal site for your fish pond

In choosing an ideal site for your fish farm good quality water source is a very important consideration. People have been known to rely on water from river or even rain water. However, you will be better off with water source that you can be sure of the quality and quantity.

Soil that is rich in clay content has better water retention characteristics and it is good for construction of fish ponds.

WHAT TYPE OF SPACE DO I NEED TO GROW MY FISH

WHAT TYPE OF SPACE

DO I NEED TO GROW MY FISH?

This is a continuation of my previous post last week on the question, what type of space do I need to grow my catfish?

RACE WAYS:

Raceways are increasingly becoming the most popular water facilities in Nigeria for raising fish. A good number of the most productive farms most especially in the urban areas use this type of facilities.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

Raceways make use of flowing water. It may well be a long narrow construction or a series of constructions, through which water flows. The water may flow through naturally, or forced to flow by the use of pump.

The semi-raceway is the most popular one here in Nigeria. The water is made to flow through slowly. The foremost advantage of raceways is that catfish can be stocked in them in high population per area of land than in ponds.

‘Open’ or ‘flow’ through raceway are raceways in which the water enters at one end and is disposed of at the other end. The water is not reused. Flow through raceways can accommodate up to 50 – 70 fishes per square meter.

‘Closed’ raceways are raceways in which the water enters at one end and is removed at the other end and filtered, aerated and reused again and again. Usually most closed raceway are not completely closed but are ‘modified closed’.

In closed raceways pumps are used to circulate the water hence, more energy is required in raceway culture than pond culture. This type of fish farming can be very profitable under close and thorough supervision.

TANKS

Also popular in Nigeria is the use of tank especially the plastics type. Their shapes may be rectangular or circular and could be closed or open like in raceways. Therefore they are also useful for very intensive culture.

Remember, that proper identification of the type of space you want to use to grow your fish is very important.

WHICH SPACE DO I USE TO GROW MY FISH

WHICH SPACE DO I USE TO GROW MY FISH?

All prospective fish farmers must learn to ask get the right answers

to the question which space do I use to grow my fish.

Usually farmers select the facilities to match the type crop to be produced.

The same is true for catfish; the type of water facilities determines how fish

are to be raised. Similarly the technique of raising fish has considerable

influence on the planning and construction of your facilities.

Once you have constructed your facility, it is usually less practicable

to change to another facility.

Your catfish farm will usually have a combination of facilities unique

to your farm. Therefore it is very important for you to have a complete

picture of the type of facilities you will need before construction is started.

It is always better to seek professional advice before investing your money.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

You can consider about five (5) types of facilities:

  • Ponds
  • Tanks
  • Raceways
  • Vats
  • Aquariums

The nature of the production system that you want deploy is the major factor you need to consider when selecting your water facility.

If your farm is to produce both fingerlings and food fish, you will need different facilities from those which will only produce food fish.

You will need to take a closer look at some of the different KINDS OF WATER FACILITIES. For example;

  1. 1.     PONDS: There are quite a few types depending on your kind of catfish farming operation.

Grow-out Ponds: these are ponds in which catfish are grown to table size. The size and arrangement are usually determined by:

a)    The topography of your land

b)    The size of your farm

c)     The economics of production in relation to your pond design.

Usually large ponds are more economical in construction, however, when it is time to harvest the cost can more than upset your savings in construction cost.

  1. 2.     HOLDING POND: This is a small pond in which parent fish stock are kept between spawning season. These types of ponds are only needed on farms that produces fingerlings and are frequently built in conjunct with spawning and rearing ponds. Holding ponds may be about 1 acre or less in size. Quite a few small ponds of about ¼ acre each are preferable so as to make the management disease outbreak easy.
  1. 3.     SPAWNING POND: This is usually a small pond of about 1 to 5 acres where parent fish stocks are placed for spawning. More than often, hapas or pens are built in the ponds to place the fishes.
  1. 4.     REARING POND: This is a small pond in which the fish fry are placed for raising into fish fingerlings. The size of your rearing pond will depend upon the number and size of fingerlings to be produced.

This post will be continued next week so look out same time same day.

It’s important that you identify the type of space you want to use to grow your fish.

HOW DO I IDENTIFY CATFISH

HOW DO I IDENTIFY CATFISH

How do I identify catfish is a question I have been asked on several occasions.  To answer this question you will need an insight into the definition of catfish.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

How To Identify Catfish

How Do I Identify Catfish

I’ll like us to look at the variety of fish bearing the name catfish:

  • African mud or (sharp tooth) catfish – Clarias gariepinus is the main specie of culture especially in Nigeria and Africa. It is also commercially grown in countries such as Holland. Some other related species like the Aluminum catfish, Chriscthys nigrodigitatus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis are also grown in Nigeria but have enjoyed less popularity.
  • The channel catfish - Ictalurus punctatus is the champion of farmed fish in America and is progressively more favoured in sport.
  • The European variety or “wels” - Silurus glanis is popular in central Europe as food fish and sports.
  • Ornamental Fishes - Such as fresh water, Glass, Network Upside down and Ocellifer catfish are also regarded as catfish.

It is important that you identify the type of catfish you want to grow.

Fish Demand In Nigeria

Fish Demand In Nigeria

Fish demand in Nigeria is on the increase

just as the demand for World supply of

Animal Protein has increased substantially

to sustain increased interest in Aquaculture

in recent years.

 http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

Aquaculture in simple language is known as fish farming.

Today fish farming is making massive pace all over the world.

The demand for fish in Nigeria has increased from 1.2million metric tons

in 1989 to about 1.5million metric tons in 2006. The present local production

is only about 20% of the estimated yearly domestic consumption.

Indeed there is a long way to go, if very positive contributions and

good profit are to be made by fish farmers in Nigeria.

If you are to take the example of agricultural crop farmers,

the first-class farmers look after their crops carefully.

Even before planting, they make certain that the soil is well prepared.

High yield seed or seedlings are selected.

They irrigate their farm regularly and ensure weeds are removed.

Fertilizers are used to enhance production and they look

out for pests and diseases.

In short, it is conscientious work that produces a good harvest.

The same is true in farming fish.

Your fish is the crop while your pond is the field.

The wild or predatory fish are your weeds.

The animals and birds which attack your fish are your pests.

In other to be successful in fish farming, you must make adequate provision

for the needs of the fish. Where you don’t pay enough attention to your fish,

you will in all probability fail.

From experience, I have come to know that failures in fish farming in Nigeria

are due to lack of proper planning; experience, training and management

just mention a few reasons.

It is my strong believe that you will come out with better results

in catfish farming as you give it more focus.

This is because of its growth culture tolerance and rugged physical

characteristics when compared with other species of fish.

You will certainly be able to take advantage of the increase in demand

FISH FARMING THE PRIMITIVE WOMAN’S WAY

FISH FARMING

THE PRIMITIVE WOMAN’S WAY

It seems in retrospect the primitive woman did some fish farming in her time.

However, it never ceases to amaze me that many Nigerians and other people

from developing countries are still using her PRIMITIVE ways to breed and grow their fish.

http://tinyurl.com/nhxvyma

What are these techniques that are still being applied today?

In this post I will quickly mention a few of the techniques that are still being used today.

a) Some people still dig their Ponds arbitrarily to massive sizes without considering;

how to prevent enemies of fish farming like alligators, frogs, birds such as egrets and

even how to drain water when its time for harvest. predator

b) There are those who still catch their fingerlings from the wild river without

consideration for their state of health or age.

c) Some still stock fish at the rate of two fish per sqm when it is possible to

stock at the rate of 50-100 fish per sqm or even more.

d) They use left-over human food to feed the fishes instead of formulating Fish Pellets.

e) They don’t even attempt to grade the fish, as a result ends up with 10% or

less of the fish from an initial stock.

The above process is full of errors yet some modern day people still use

these obsolete practices.

Wouldn’t you think it’s time to do your fish farming the right way?

If your intention is to nurse your fish fingerlings from 10 grams to 1kg in 4-5months;
