Hi My Name Is Emmanuel
I make bold to say that the coming of
GSM to Nigeria has no doubt transformed
the telecoms connectivity of the nation.
After all I was physically involved
in trying to establish an interconnect regime
at the time of coming to being
of other network operators
Between 1999 and 2001, while the number
of installed telephone lines was about
1.2Million, the connected lines
stood at about 400,000.
However, as at June 2011,
the number of active lines (subscribers)
stood at 90,533,178 according to figures
stated by the
Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC)
Mobile GSM: 84,093,173
Mobile (CDMA): 5,558,612
Fixed Wired/Wireless: 881,393
Total: 90,533,178

Judging from these statistics,
Nigeria is indeed the fastest growing
telecoms industry in Africa
No doubt the industry in the last 10 years
has brought a large inflow of investment
into the country, created
reasonable employment opportunity
and has brought a large sum of revenue
to the Federal Government
through the regulatory body in the form
of licensing fees and sale of spectrum.
Enough of the positive aspects
let us talk about you and me
that form the statistics of active lines.
Over 4 billion people around the world
own cell phones and as the market
for new devices are growing,
so has concerns about the safety
of cell phone radiation.
Recent studies have found significantly
higher risks
for brain and salivary gland tumors
among people who have used
cell phones for 10 years or longer.
The state of the science is provocative
and troubling, and much more
research is essential.
Indeed there is urgent need
for Nigeria
to carry out an in-depth research
in view of the fact that cell phones
have become the primary means of
communication rather than secondary.
This is even so because the average
Nigerian
stays longer on the phone than its
European or American counterpart.
This is evident by the promotion of
free night calls by the various
network operators.
Let’s Talk About You And Me Now

Many people living near masts
are experiencing increasing health problems
at levels as low as 0.05 volts per metre,
especially sleep disruption, headaches,
tiredness,
behavior changes in children, epilepsy,
nosebleeds and skin complaints.
Since the Dead have no electrical
brain activity with which
an external electromagnetic field
can interfere; will you rather be dead
so that the negative effects of GSM
(electromagnetic fields) will not
have any adverse effect on you?
I’m sure you will prefer to be alive.
