While you are waiting for the supply of fingerlings the following points should be noted in order to boost the health and comfort of your fish.

 1.     MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT DARK

It has been observed that Catfishes feed better and are more comfortable in dark environment. It is therefore in your overall interest if you create a good and tight shade for your pond.

In order to achieve this, you can use aluminum spans roofing sheets, tarpaulin (nylon type preferable), raffia thatched roof etc.

 2.     IN RACEWAYS CEMENT  MUST BE WASHED OFF

Where your facility is a raceway built with concrete or block, you must wash off the cement. Where you don’t, you will more than likely loose your fingerlings as a result of the alkalinity caused by the cement dust. I lost 2,000 heterobranchus fingerlings because of this costly mistake so be warned.

 3.     WATER QUALITY TESTS

Before you embark on a major commercial catfish farming operation it is in your own interest to carry out your water quality test. It is very important that you confirm from the result of your water quality test to see how well it tallies with the exact requirement table as shown below.

Oxygen Greater than 3 parts per million
To C 20-30o C, 27oC - Optimum
PH 6.5 - 8
Nitrogen <120% saturation
CO2 <15ppm
NH3 <0.05ppm
NH4 <8.80ppm
NO2 <0.25ppm
NO3 <250ppm
Cu <0.03ppm
Zn 0.1ppm
Cd 0.0006ppm
Salinity <15.000ppm

 4.     USE GOOD QUALITY WATER

 i.   Tap Water: When using tap water, make sure you leave the water in the pond for at least two days before introducing the fish. This is to let the chlorine or chloramines added from the water works as disinfectant to evaporate, if not it could harm fish.

ii.   Borehole  or Well Water Source: In the case of borehole or well water, allow your water to run through a shower rose sprinkle to remove the carbon dioxide in the water and leave it for 2 days before stocking your fish.

iii. Stream / River or Tidal Movement Water: In order to prevent dangerous predators from entering your pond via the inlet you must ensure those appropriate mesh screens are put in place.

 5.     USE OF MOSQUITO MESH NET

The use of mosquito mesh net have been found very useful if your fingerlings are less than 2inches to prevent cannibalism by frogs and messy spawning in your ponds by toads. However, it will not necessary if you buy juveniles about 3 – 4inches and above. For profitable results and as your starting stock I’ll recommend you start with juveniles.
